Though rally towels might not be as common among teams in the National Basketball Association as they are in the other major sports leagues in the United States, but for the teams that do have them, they are just as important as they are for teams of other sports. And more and more NBA teams (and their fans) are adopting rally towels every year.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are one of the NBA’s earliest adopters of rally towels and have been issuing them to fans for decades now. Unlike many teams, the Cavaliers don’t have a consistent design or theme for their rally towels. New towels are designed every season, and a second design is used when the team gets to the playoffs.

Basketball Towels:

One interesting thing about the Cavaliers’ rally towels, however, is that they are always white. Though the Cavaliers’ team colors are wine and gold, accented with navy and black, they are committed to being “white towel people.” They do this out of loyalty to their city—the Cleveland Browns are longtime rivals of the Pittsburgh Steelers, with their notorious “Terrible Towel.” As the Terrible Towel is gold, sports fans in Cleveland want nothing to do with a rally towel in that color. Thus, the Cavaliers choose to have a white towel, though their wine and gold colors are almost always used when their logos and mottoes are screen printed onto their rally towels.

Loyalty is a big deal in Cleveland, as LeBron James found out in a December 2010 game. When he reentered the Quicken Loans Arena for the first time since leaving the Cavaliers as a free agent, rally towels were out in force, this time with a chorus of booing, to remind LeBron of his betrayal of Cleveland and the Cavaliers. While it wasn’t enough to stop LeBron James from leading the Miami Heat to victory that night, he did eventually return to the Cavaliers in 2014.

Rally Towels in the NBA Playoffs

Speaking of the Miami Heat, when it comes to the design of their rally towels, they are generally more consistent and traditional. Season towels are usually black or maroon—the teams colors—but playoff towels are always “White Hot.” Heat fans use this slogan as their rallying cry during the playoffs, and the Miami Heat print it in black on white rally towels that they distribute at playoff games.

The Oklahoma City Thunder, Portland Trail Blazers, and Boston Celtics have also used rally towels for a number of years. More recent adopters of rally towels in the NBA include the Dallas Mavericks, the Memphis Grizzlies, the Indiana Pacers, and Philadelphia 76ers, all of whom first issued their rally towels to fans in 2011. It’s interesting to note that the two games where the Mavericks distributed rally towels that season were against the Thunder and the Trail Blazers—teams that already had their own rally towels. Perhaps it was important to the Mavericks not to be outdone, and they wanted towels in the hands of their own fans to out-cheer and out-wave any towel-wielding fans of their opponents. The Dallas Mavericks went on to become the 2011 NBA Champions, so it seems like it was a good idea!
