Originally from Salt Lake City in Utah, the Jazz professional basketball team began its inaugural season as the New Orleans Jazz in 1974-1975. During their early years they were one of the least successful league teams, and 10 seasons passed before the Jazz qualified for their first play-off appearance. However, it was not until 2004 that they missed the play-offs again.
The Jazz experienced continual venue issues In New Orleans; they played in the Municipal Auditorium during their first season, then in the highly unsuitable Loyola Field house. They later played in the Louisiana Super Drome, but this was also unsuitable due to onerous lease conditions and the stadium being in high demand.
The Jazz moved to Salt Lake City in 1979. As a member of the NBA’s Western Conference Northwest Division, the Utah Jazz’s home games are played at Vivint Smart Home Arena. Point-guard John Stockton was drafted by the Utah Jazz in 1984, then Karl Malone in 1985. Renowned for their brilliant execution of the pick-and-roll offensive set, these brilliant players led the Utah Jazz to great achievements, with both retirings as possibly the most productive guard-forward duo in the history of basketball.
In 1988 the Utah Jazz became one of the great powerhouse teams of the 1990s. In the 1997 and 1998 finals they lost to Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls.
