Originally established in October 1967 as a charter franchise of the American Basketball Association, today’s professional basketball team known as the Brooklyn Nets has its base in Brooklyn, one of the most populated boroughs of New York City. Initially playing in Teaneck, New Jersey, as the New Jersey Americans, the Nets then moved to Long Island in 1968 as the New York Nets. After nine seasons with the American Basketball Association, the Nets played their final season on Long Island, moving to the NBA in 1976; at which time three other franchises were also admitted. All four are still in the league today.
Between 1967 and 1968 they were called ‘New Jersey Americans’, then evolved to become ‘New York Nets’ in 1968, ‘New Jersey Nets’ in 1977, then ‘Brooklyn Nets’ in 2012. During this time the Nets won ABA championships in 1974 and 1976. Following 35 seasons in New Jersey, their next move was back to the state of New York where they renamed themselves Brooklyn Nets and started their 2012 – 2013 NBA season.
The name ‘Nets’ was chosen because it rhymes with two other professional sporting teams who were also playing in the New York area –New York Mets (baseball) and New York Jets (football). The latest Nets news is that Joe Tsai could become controlling owner of the Brooklyn Nets in 2021.
