The professional basketball team known today as the Washington Wizards was founded as the Chicago Packers in 1961; the following season they became the Chicago Zephyrs; then the Bullets in 1963 after relocating to Baltimore in Maryland. In 1973 they were called the Capital Bullets, then between 1974 and 1995 they played as the Washington Bullets. They were later renamed Washington Wizards by owner Abe Pollin because of his dislike of the word ‘bullet’. However, as the Washington Bullets in the 1970s they made four appearances at the NBA finals, winning the 1977–78 championship. The name Washington Wizards depicts power and energy, highlighting the team’s intelligent and magical nature.
Now located in Washington DC, the Wizards compete as a member of the NBA’s Eastern Conference Southeast Division; their home games are played at the Verizon Centre, previously called the MCI Centre, in Chinatown, Washington DC.
Retired NBA superstar, Michael Jordan, became President of Operations and minority owner of the Wizards in 2000, and the following year he decided to play for the Wizards. Because of his ineffective return to the court, Jordan permanently retired in 2003. Then, Pollin shocked everyone by deciding against retaining Jordan (arguably the best player in basketball history) as President of the Wizards, citing poor management decisions. In the 2013-14 season the Wizards made it to the play-offs, with John Wall leading his team to their first division title in 38 years. Their season ended with a seven-game series loss in the semi-finals.
