Continuing our series on NBA basketball teams, this blog post focuses on a much younger team: the Charlotte Hornets. Joining the NBA in 1988, they started out as the Charlotte Hornets until the franchise relocated to New Orleans in 2002.
Moving the Team
2 years later, the NBA announced a new team: the Charlotte Bobcats. They played under this name until 2014, when the New Orleans Hornets decided to rename themselves the New Orleans Pelicans. Once the name, records, and official history were returned, the Bobcats became the Hornets once again. Possibly due to how young the team is, they have yet to win a championship and hold no conference titles or division titles. One record held by the Hornets–known then as the Bobcats–is that in 2002 they became the first major professional sports team in the U.S. to have a majority African American owner: Robert L. Johnson. The rapper Nelly became a co-owner in 2004. In 2010, Johnson sold the team to former Chicago Bulls player Michael Jordan.
This last season, the team has had some success trading Miles Plumlee and Marco Belinelli for Dwight Howard and All-Star player Kemba Walker, who managed to pass two of Dell Curry’s franchise records: most three-pointers and all-time leading scorer.
Charlotte’s second Hornets logo shows a teal and purple front-facing hornet with the letters ‘Charlotte Hornets’. Wings sprout up above the head on both left and right, with teal and purple details. Wings sprout up above the head on both left and right, with teal and purple details. The hornet’s stinger is prominently shown and a basketball pattern is above the stinger. Hornets have a different secondary logo which includes a hornet facing to the side. The logo is teal and purple body arched in a ‘C’ shape representing the city of Charlotte, with a modified version of the Hornets original logo as the official mascot logo.
