In this blog, we continue our focus on NBA teams with a team that had a brief start as the Buffalo Bisons in 1946. Just a month later, they moved to Illinois and renamed themselves the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. In 1951, another move prompted the team to become the Milwaukee Hawks for 4 years until they moved again and became the St. Louis Hawks. In their final move in 1968, they became the Atlanta Hawks, as we know them today.
In the team’s history, they have only won 1 NBA Championship and have made it to 4 NBA Finals, but they have been unable to make it to the Finals since 1961 when they were located in St. Louis.
Despite having the second-longest drought for NBA championships, the Atlanta Hawks have been able to win some division titles. Their acquisition of Dominique Wilkins in 1982 from the Utah Jazz was a key factor in helping them earn these titles. To this day, Wilkins is still the all-time leading scorer for the Atlanta Hawks. Unfortunately, Wilkins had a season-ending injury during the 1991 season and was later traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in 1994. Since then, the Hawks have only been able to obtain 1 division title in 2015.
