The Sacramento Kings were formed in 1923 and have endured one of the roughest roads in NBA history. Since conception, the franchise has had four nicknames and relocated five times – the most in NBA history. Known as the Rochester Seagrams until 1943, the Kings became Eber Seagram Pros for just one season until changing to Rochester Pros. Founded by Les Harrison and sponsored by Seagrams and Eber Brothers, the Rochester Pros played the Harlem Globetrotters and other prominent barnstorming teams.
They joined the NBL in 1945, requiring another name change, so they became Rochester Royals. As Royals they enjoyed many successful years, winning the NBL title in 1945-46. In 1946-47 and 1947-48 the Royals won the division title, becoming one of the most powerful franchises in professional basketball. Moving to Cincinnati in 1957, they relocated again in 1972, forcing another name change because Kansas City already had a ‘Royals’ team, so they chose ‘Kings’, which has stayed with them ever since.
In their first year with the NBL they won the title; then made the next two finals. After the 1949 BAA-NBL merger their success continued, winning another title in 1951. Between 1998 and 2006 the Kings won 5 playoff series, their longest streak in franchise history. Almost making the 2002 finals, they controversially lost to the Los Angeles Lakers. Their record since 2006 has been dismal but it’s hoped Kevin Johnson, Sacramento Mayor, and former NBA All-Star, can retain the Kings in Sacramento and improve the franchise’s fortunes.
