The professional basketball team known as the Memphis Grizzlies was originally the Vancouver Grizzlies, who joined the NBA in the 1995 – 1996 season. Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, the Vancouver Grizzlies began as a member of the Midwest Division of the NBA’s Western Conference.
Established in 1995, both the Vancouver Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors were part of the NBA’s expansion into Canada. Relocating to Memphis, Tennessee, following the 2000-2001 season, they have renamed the Memphis Grizzlies. For their entire six seasons in Vancouver, the Grizzlies’ home games were played at General Motors Place, supported of course by Grizz, their mascot, who is currently in his 18th season. The Grizzlies moved to Memphis following the conclusion of the 2000-2001 season after applying to the NBA in March 2001 to relocate. Their request was granted, resulting in the Memphis Grizzlies becoming first of the ‘big four’ major sports leagues to play its home games in Memphis.
Today, the Grizzlies are based in Memphis and are part of the NBA’s Western Conference Southwest Division; they play their home games at FedExForum. The Memphis Grizzlies team is owned by Robert Pera, who recently announced he intends maintaining his controlling interest in the Grizzlies. Most Grizzlies fans will appreciate this news because it gives the Grizzlies some direction as they move forward. Whether Chris Wallace and JB Bickerstaff remain GM and Coach is not known. The Memphis Grizzlies played their home games at Pyramid Arena during their first three seasons in Memphis.
