Yoga is not only a great way to stay in shape, but it’s also extremely relaxing. Like any workout, though, there are certain steps everyone should take to limber up and get the most out of their exercise. You can call them precautions, you can call them preparations, but following these suggestions will be sure to make your yoga routine as productive as possible.

Set Aside Space

There are a couple of reasons to have a space set aside just for yoga. A primary reason is to eliminate distractions. Part of yoga is creating a serene experience, and you don’t want noises and clutter getting in the way. It may not always be convenient to have dedicated yoga space, but if you have an area that you can easily clear each time you start a workout, that’ll be enough.

Use the Right Gear

It’s true, you can do yoga just lying down on the floor. More often than not, though, a hard, unforgiving surface like that is going to be detrimental to your back and joints. Get a good yoga mat to support you. A more comfortable yoga routine is a more productive one. Right alongside the mat, invest in a nice yoga towel! Not only is a yoga towel invaluable if you’re doing hot yoga, though even if you aren’t doing hot yoga, it’s helpful to have a towel handy in case you work up a sweat. The nice thing about yoga is that you’ll pretty much be set with these two things. As long as your clothes are comfortable, non-constricting, and don’t tangle you up or get in the way, you’re set.

Get the Energy You Need

Some people write yoga oft as soft exercise, but it can be as demanding as and stringent as other forms of exercise. And to support healthy exercise, you need the right fuel. You don’t want to eat a meal too close to when you’re exercising. Ideally at least two to four hours should pass between a meal and a workout, though exceptions can be made for a small snack if you really need it.

Work At Your Body’s Pace

Important with any workout is to not over exert yourself, and to do what your body is capable of and what needs. Yoga is a uniquely tuned form of exercise that is well suited to compensating for what your body is up to doing at any given time. On a similar note, vary your routine from time to time. This gives your body the opportunity to stretch and strengthen different muscles and joints, and there is a wealth of different types of yoga and positions, so you’ll rarely need to do the same thing twice. Here are some suggestions for easing in to your workout:

  • Cat pose
  • Child’s pose
  • Bridge pose

Follow Up Matters

Most yoga routines incorporate a helpful cool-down period of the most basic, relaxing poses at the end. These are important for putting the body in its recovery cycle that will strengthen the stretched and strained muscles. Another important aspect of following up on your workout is to have a good shower afterward, which not only cools you down but helps wash away toxins flushed out by your workout.con

Make It Fun

Of course, we work out to get stronger, and it can be hard work, but it should also be fun! There are a lot of ways to make your yoga routine fun. A common method is to attach a theme to the workout; a superhero yoga routine, a European yoga routine, etc. Just set the mood with some fitting music and some moves that seem appropriate and you’re good to go. Yoga clothes and gear is also fun to shop for, and we at Rally Towels can contribute with our new yoga towels! Not only are they perfectly sized for your yoga mat, but our customization options will let you get the perfect towels for your routines, or even your whole class or company!
