Losing the first 15 games that they played, the Cleveland Cavaliers struggled from the start. It wasn’t until 1976 that they started to see successes, including winning their first division title and making the playoffs for the first time. While they had several playoff appearances over the next 30 years, they also suffered several losing streaks.
Drafting Lebron James
After drafting LeBron James in 2003, the team slowly started to become playoff contenders again. They even succeeded in making it to the NBA Finals in 2007. However, their failure to make it to the Finals again over the next 3 seasons prompted James to leave Cleveland and sign with the Miami Heat. Afterward, the Cavs suffered the longest NBA losing streak in a single season–and second-longest losing streak overall–by losing 26 games in a row.
Kyrie Irving’s draft in 2011, Kevin Love’s transfer in 2014, and James’ return in 2014 all contributed to helping the Cleveland Cavaliers appear in 3 consecutive NBA Finals. They even succeeded in winning the 2016 NBA Championship against the Golden State Warriors, who we discussed in a previous blog.
